“Official Secrets” Movie Quotes 2019

Official Secrets, a British drama film that premieres in 2019, is about Katharine Gun. Gun was a whistleblower who revealed a memo detailing an illegal spying operation by the United States and British intelligence services. This memo was used to gauge sentiment and possibly blackmail United Nations diplomats assigned to vote on a resolution relating to the 2003 invasion. Gavin Hood directed the film, while Keira Knightley plays gun. Ralph Fiennes, Matthew Goode, and Matt Smith star in the movie.

This is the true story of a British whistleblower who revealed information about an illegal NSA spy operation to pressure the UN Security Council to sanction the invasion of Iraq in 2003.


Summary of Official Secrets Plot

Katharine Gun, the GCHQ analyst, receives a memo from the United States detailing a joint operation by the United States and Britain to spy on diplomats of several member states’ non-permanent United Nations Security Council countries Cameroon (Chile, Bulgaria, Bulgaria, and Guinea. This was done to “dig dirt” and influence the Security Council to approve a resolution supporting an invasion. Katharine, furious that the United Kingdom is being led to war under pretenses, leaks the memo from Katharine to a friend in the anti-war movement. She then passes it on to Yvonne Ridley (The Observer journalist Martin Bright).
