The film is fictionalized based on Frank Lucas’ criminal career. He was a La Grange, North Carolina gangster who smuggled heroin into America on American service planes. After returning from Vietnam War, Lucas was detained by Richie Roberts’ task force. Russell Crowe and Denzel Washington star in the film, their first roles as lead actors since Virtuosity (1995). Ted Levine, John Ortiz, and Josh Brolin are also featured in the movie: Ruby Dee, Lymari Nal, Cuba Gooding Jr., Chiwetel Emofor, Norman Reedus, and Chiwetel Ejiofor.
