LATAM Mobile Summit Brings Latin American Mobile Ecosystem to Silicon Valley

San Francisco from aboveSe hablan móvil en América Latina. Translation: The mobile market in Latin America is strong.

According to eMarketer, the region has 396 million mobile users, and the mobile industry accounts for 5 percent of Latin America’s economy. But only 156 million of current mobile users are smartphone users.  That’s less than 40 percent of smartphone user penetration.

For comparison, the United States has 268 million mobile users, 191 million smartphone users, and mobile accounts for about 2 percent of the economy.

By 2019, the number of smartphone users in Latin America is projected to grow to 246 million (237 million in U.S.) and 57 percent smartphone user penetration. As smartphone usage increases in Latin America, the mobile market in the region will continue to grow stronger.

Such growth presents opportunity.

In January, Latin American mobile leaders from 20 countries came to San Francisco for LATAM Mobile Summit to explore this opportunity. The goal was to learn how to attract, engage and monetize Latin American customers by creating unique mobile products.

Robert Sterling, an entrepreneur from Houston, covered the LATAM Mobile Summit for Evrybit.
