The South Los Angeles neighborhood of Watts is not known for education. Today, one-third of Watt’s residents have a high school diploma, and only 3 percent of the community has earned a college degree.
College Track is determined to make college the expectation in Watts. In 2015, College Track launched its eighth site with a cohort of 75 students from Jordan High School. College Track Watts will provide students with the support and commitment they need to enroll in and graduate from college.
For Marisa Ramirez, the site director at College Track Watts, and Rosa Castañeda, the Storytelling Collective instructor, giving students a platform to voice their stories and those of their community is a fundamental part of their journey toward college.
